In the theatre you never want to work with children or animals; in photography it's a little different. Family photography is a very important part of many professional photographers skill sets. It's also quite a challenging thing to master.
With adults it's easy to tell them what you want them to do. They might not be great at taking direction, but with a bit of effort almost anyone can be made strike a respectable pose. Try convincing a six year old to "squinch".
The
flipside of this is that good family photographs are, by their very
nature, relatively unposed. To get a good shot of a toddler, you need to
take it while they're relaxed, engaged or distracted.
In order to provide some inspiration I've gathered 50 different portraits of toddlers. You'll be able to see all the different ways photographers have managed to capture stunning images of the most awkward of subjects. Enjoy!
