Teach What You Love
Not sure where to start? Here are some quick suggestions for your next tutorial.
Pick a Topic You Love
Passion is an important driving force behind any tutorial. When you learn from someone who is passionate, you are not only entertained but you're also able to absorb the material that much more because they make the act of learning fun. So no matter how long or short your tutorials are, make sure your passion is at the center.
Since art is my personal passion, I thought it would be fitting to create a tutorial along the lines of this general topic. Here are a few of the initial projects I had in mind:
- Digital painting tutorial
- Tape wall art mural
- Simple origami project
Even though digital painting is my number one creative passion, I thought a tutorial on digital painting would be limited to only a particular audience. People would have to have access to both Adobe Photoshop and a pen tablet to achieve the final painting.
In addition to that, a tutorial on digital painting would require that I record a computer screen, and that often shows up as dull. The screen recording software I'd need to use would also show up horribly small on my phone, making it difficult to do what I needed to do. In the end, it would probably be best to move onto a much more achievable activity.
My point is, before you jump into any project, try to quickly weigh the pros and cons of each topic. Always remember to create a tutorial that is actually doable across the board of your followers no matter their experience level.
Create DIY Tutorials
Another option you have is to create a quick DIY tutorial. The beauty of these tutorials is that they are fast and easy, and use as few resources as possible to achieve the final result.
The origami and mural projects I listed earlier both perfectly fit in line with this concept. Not only do they use few resources, but if you break the tutorial down effectively, you can also make sure that anyone can achieve a cool result.
Since I've already created a tape mural in my living space, I decided to opt for the origami project. Here I'll be creating one of my favorite paper crafts, a traditional origami swan.
How to Create a Tutorial
Now that we have a topic chosen, let's move onto how to create a tutorial-based story for Instagram.
Break Down the Steps
Jot down in a notebook or use a notes app in your phone to break down the entire process for your tutorial. Start with an introduction of what the tutorial covers as well as a visual of the final result.
For each step, consider the visuals you'll need to make the tutorial understandable as well as achievable.
What angle should you use for each visual?
Which steps work better with photo or video?
How long will the tutorial need to be?
These are all questions that will help you understand how to break down the tutorial before you dive into the process. And although it's easy to overlook this step, having an organized idea for a more cohesive tutorial will save you lots of time in the long run.
Include What You Need
What would you need for a paper craft project like my origami swan? No matter how simple or complex the project may be, make sure you include a brief list of all the materials your audience will use.
For this project, you'll need:
- Colorful paper
- A ruler
- A pencil
Almost everyone should have these materials somewhere around the house. And if you keep your list simple like this one, you're sure to make your tutorial that much more approachable by a wider audience.
Guide Your Followers with Markers & Emojis
Don't forget that Instagram Stories also comes with amazing editing options that allow you to apply filters, draw with markers, or write text and emojis.
Write Out Each Step with Text
There's nothing more annoying then being caught off guard by a video's volume. And great Instagram Stories can be easily ruined with loud music or other annoying sounds. To keep your followers engaged so that they actually finish the complete tutorial, consider using text instead of a voice-over to write out each step.
Not only will this allow you to concentrate more on the visuals, but you can also make sure that you're covering all the important information for you tutorial.
To mute the sound of your videos completely, just hit the Volume icon under your editing options.
Mark Important Points with Drawings
Where should the paper be cut? And what direction does it need to be folded? Have fun drawing extra arrows to point out each step.
These points of interest will not only direct the eye to what needs to be done but they will also add a little personal touch to your stories.
For one of the videos in my tutorial below, notice how I used simple dotted lines drawn in Instagram to show where to cut the paper. I also drew arrows on the other photos and videos to show which direction you should fold the paper.
Show Progression with Emojis
Nowadays, emojis are so much more than just funny faces. They include icons of different foods, expressions, and objects that can provide some extra help when describing an important step.
Add a scissors emoji, illustrate your progress through witty expressions, or include explosive fireworks icons to show when you're finished.
