LUTs and Premiere Pro: True and False

Despite their widespread use, there are still some misconceptions around LUTs. To help clear some of that up for you, I'll look at some common statements made about LUTs and tell you if they're true or false:

1. LUTs Are Unprofessional

False: LUTs are used by a wide range of professionals, from freelancers to feature filmmakers!

Don't feel like using a LUT means you don't value the quality of your work or your craft. They're tools, and useful ones at that. With that being said, grading after applying the LUT can help you get the most out of this tool.

2. Not All LUTs Work for All Footage

True: LUTs are many things, but they aren't magic.

A great LUT can do a lot to elevate your projects. But they shouldn't be used just for the sake of using them. Consider what you want the look and feel of your work to be. What you figure out can determine what LUT to use, or if one is even needed at all.

3. You Should Color Correct Before Applying the LUT

True: but this answer does come with some asterisks.

If you're applying a creative LUT that you really like the look of, then you'll want to color correct beforehand. But if you want to make some tweaks to the results the LUT gives you, then you're more than welcome to make some changes afterward.
