How to Add Music to Premiere Pro (Step by Step)
Learning how to add music to Premiere Pro is easy. It only takes a few seconds. It’s a production technique that you’ll find yourself using in every video you edit.
For this tutorial, we’ll demonstrate with stock footage from Envato Elements. You can download the beautiful clip here. It’s one of thousands of stock clips available today on Envato Elements.
Here’s how to get a song into Premiere Pro, step by step.
1. Choose Music to Add to a Video
The first step is to choose music that you want to add to your video. My favorite source for this is Envato Elements. Elements has thousands of royalty-free audio tracks that members can download. There are songs in every style and for every theme. And you don’t have to worry about licensing issues.
Note: you can find music from many other sources, but be careful. Always ensure that you have the rights to use the music in question.

You can also use music that you’ve recorded yourself. All you need is an audio file stored on your computer. For this tutorial, let’s use the Ambient Cinematic Beautiful song from the Envato Elements library. You can download it today to follow along.
2. Add Music to Your Premiere Pro Project Timeline
With a song chosen, go ahead and launch Premiere Pro. Find a video project that you’re editing and open it up. Then, briefly familiarize yourself with the layout.
In the upper center of the screen, you’ll see your video previewed. This panel is called the Program Monitor. In real time, it lets you visualize edits that you’re making.
Directly below the Program Monitor is the Timeline. Think of the Timeline as Premiere’s control center. It’s really the hub for the edits that you make! In the Timeline, you’ll control clip sequencing, layering, timing, and so much more.

Notice here that the video clip is shown as a purple bar. Above it, you can see the time markers. They tell you when any multimedia begins, ends, and how long it lasts.
To see how to add music to a video, browse to the stored music on your computer. Click to select it. Then, drag it over your Timeline. Hover over one of the audio tracks. These are labeled A1, A2, and so on. When you do, you’ll see a green bar appear. This is your song!

Release your cursor, and just like that, you’ve learned how to add music into Premiere Pro.
3. Trim and Adjust to Stay in Sync
You just saw how to add music to a video in Premiere. But your work may not be done. In Premiere, you can trim audio and more. Notice here that the song is much longer than the video. Unless you want to add more footage, it might be useful to trim music so that it fits your video.
To do that, click on the song in your Timeline. Then, in the menu on the left, click on the Razor Tool. Hover over the music, right below the end of the video clip. Then, click once. Think of this as “cropping” music. It will now end at the same time as the video.

Of course, you can trim the song between any two points. For longer songs and shorter videos, I like to choose a dramatic part of the music and trim the full song so that it fits neatly into my video. The options are limitless here. It’s up to you, and the creative goals you have in mind for your production!
