Video editing is a breeze in Adobe Premiere Pro. It’s a fully-featured editor that lets you add an array of dramatic effects. Some of these effects help you add stylish text to your videos. Text effects in Premiere Pro are easy to add, and they elevate the designs of each video you build.

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to animate text in Premiere Pro. Premiere Pro text animation is an essential skill that you’ll use in every single project. With an array of Adobe Premiere text animation options, there are many ways to style text in creative and new ways.

Let’s learn how to add Premiere Pro text effects quickly.

How to Animate Text in Premiere Pro (Step by Step)

Premiere Pro text animation effects are easy to add. You can apply them to any video that you work with! When you use Adobe Premiere text animation, you can enhance how titles and captions appear on-screen. There are many ways to do this, and we’ll demonstrate a key method below.

For this tutorial, we’ll use stock footage from Envato Elements. This clip is called A Fluffy Black Cat Running on Grass, and you can click here to download it now.

Let’s get to work! We'll practice how to animate text in Premiere Pro with this example footage.

1. Add Text Titles to a Clip

With your video open in Premiere Pro, familiarize yourself with the layout of the app. In the upper portion of your screen, you’ll see the Program Monitor.

This is where your video clip will preview. It’s a real-time look at edits you make. Learning how to animate text in Premiere Pro is easier with previews in this view. These include the Adobe Premiere text animation designs that we’re about to add.

Premiere Pro text animation effects will preview on the Program Monitor. Text layers are placed below, in the Timeline. (Stock footage: Envato Elements.)

Below the Program Monitor is the Timeline. This is the control center for timing and sequencing multimedia in Premiere. You’ll see the video clip as a blue bar.

To the left of the Timeline, you’ll see a toolbar with several menu options. At the bottom of these is the Type Tool. Click the Type Tool to select it. This is how we’ll add text that we will then animate and add effects to.

With the Type Tool active, move your cursor onto the Program Monitor. Find a spot on the frame where you want to add some text. Click once, and you’ll see a text box appear. Into this, you can type in your own words. We’ll next use these to add Premiere Pro text effects.

2. Open the Effect Controls

Premiere Pro text animation effects are found on the Effect Controls menu. It’s a powerful Premiere Pro menu. But you won’t see it by default.

To open Effect Controls, find the Window dropdown at the top of your Premiere Pro screen. Click Window, and from the list of options, click Effect Controls. Watch what happens. A new sidebar appears, just to the left of the Program Monitor.

Go to Window > Effect Controls, and you’ll see the Effect Controls menu launch on the left side of your Premiere Pro screen. (Stock footage: Envato Elements.)

On this menu, you can choose from a wide array of Premiere Pro text animation designs. For example, you can change the position or rotation of your text. Another great idea is to change the scale. By changing the scale, you can animate text and make it larger or smaller as your video plays.

For this tutorial, we’ll  add a custom scale effect using the Effect Controls. No matter what effect you choose, the workflow is the same.

3. Add Premiere Pro Text Effects

To add a scale Adobe Premiere text animation, make sure to select your text in the Timeline. Then, find the Playhead. The Playhead is the vertical blue bar in the Timeline. This controls the frame that you have in view, and are editing in Premiere.

What you’ll want to do is move it to where you want your effect to end. In other words, if you want to enlarge text, place the Playhead where you want text to be at its full size.

With the Playhead positioned, find the Scale option on Effect Controls. Then, click the Stopwatch symbol. (Stock footage: Envato Elements.)

Now, navigate to the Effect Controls menu. In the Graphics group, find the Scale option. Beside it, you’ll see a Stopwatch icon. Click on it. Now, return to the Playhead and drag it to the left. Choose an earlier frame in the clip, where you want your Premiere Pro text effects to start.

Then, adjust the value in the Scale group. By default, it shows 100. A smaller number reduces the text’s size. A larger number enlarges it. Choose a value by typing it into the box. When you’re finished, hit Enter on your keyboard. Finally, press your Spacebar.
