When and How to Use Wide Angle Zoom Lenses

Read Time: 2 mins

Wide angle lenses are a favorite of mine to show a completely different perspective on a scene. Not only are wide angle lenses useful to "fit everything" in a scene, they can also be used for creative effects to change the viewer's perception of a scene.

Wide angle lenses are a go-to choice for landscape, architectural, and real estate photographers, but why is that? For one, the focal length of a wide angle lens can help you ensure that everything fits in the scene.

A secondary benefit is the creative perspectives that a wide angle lens can apply. In the cow image below for example, we all know that the cow's nose isn't larger than its body. But the wide angle perspective put the viewer in the midst of a scene, as if they're staring the cow eye-to-eye!

Check out the video lesson above to spark your thinking on how to use a wide angle lens to capture the action in a scene.

This wide angle shot of a cow in a meadow is the perfect example of how wide angles can put the viewer right in the heart of the scene.

The wide angle lens is just one more tool that many photographers keep in their bag for changing perspective. This is what it's all about when you're building your camera kit: adding more and more lenses that give you different options for visual storytelling.

So, what should you look for when choosing a lens? The perfect complement to that advice is the course What Every Photographer Should Know About Lenses. Not all lenses are created equally, and I'll teach you what to look for as you begin to build out your own lens lineup.
