Pop your blue suede shoes back in the wardrobe, it’s not that Memphis. The Memphis Group was founded in 1980 by Ettore Sottsass, who named it Memphis after being inspired by a Bob Dylan song. The Memphis style was one of bold colours and abstract shapes, very much influenced by Art Deco and Kitsch. The Memphis Group produced furniture and household objects to mixed reactions, but it went on to inspire a number of styles and looks among those who were fans—the first Apple Watch had a definite nod to Memphis!
Memphis has seen somewhat of a revival in the last decade or so, and when David Bowie died in 2016, his huge Memphis collection (over 400 pieces) was auctioned off at Sotheby’s, raising £1.4 million.
