The way a film or video camera moves in a scene is as much a part of storytelling as the script or actors. A rack focus—or focus pull—is a creative way to shift the focus from an object or person in the foreground to one in the background, or vice versa. In this Coffee Break Course, you’ll learn why a rack focus is used, and how to do it well!

1.1 What Is a Rack Focus?

[MUSIC] Hi and welcome to Creative Camera Movement, I'm Cindy Burgess for Tut+. In this session we're going to look at the rack focus, a rack focus or focus pole. Involves shifting the focused from an object in the foreground to an object in the background, or vice versa, by turning the focal ring on a lens. The camera itself usually doesn't move, just the lens. Stay tuned now to find out why we rack focus, and how to do it yourself.
